The Diabetes Education and Camping Association promotes communication, provides education, shares resources and serves as a worldwide voice to advance diabetes camping programs that meet the diverse needs of all individuals and families.

Dear DECA Friends,

My name is Jen Hanson and I am working with Lorne Abramson and Shelley Yeager on the development of a new and exciting initiative.

In collaboration with the AADE Camps Specialty Group, DECA is working to develop a Diabetes Camp Education Toolkit—a resource that will assist diabetes camp staff and volunteers in facilitating accurate diabetes education to their campers through engaging and age-appropriate games, skits and activities.

We are reaching out to the diabetes camp community and inviting you to take part in the creation of this toolkit.  We are looking for help in compiling the following:

  • Descriptions of diabetes camp education programs you use successfully.
  • Information about what you have tried to teach and how you tried to teach it.
  • Descriptions of games/themes used to promote diabetes education.
  • Information about challenges you have had regarding diabetes education at your camp (including games/themes that have not worked well).

In recognition of your contributions to this toolkit, we will ensure the following:

  • Your name (or the contributor’s name) included as a co-author of the toolkit.
  • Your camp name included with each game/theme contributed to the toolkit.
  • Your camp description to be included in the appendix of the toolkit document.

We are hoping to include the ideas and build on the experiences of as many individuals involved in the diabetes camping community as possible. As such, we would appreciate your forwarding this opportunity on to any of your camp staff/volunteers/alumni who may be interested in being involved and recognized in this initiative.

If you have diabetes education games/themes/activities compiled in an electronic format, we would love for you to pass them along (forward to Jen Hanson) by August 31, 2011.  Alternatively, you may mail hard copies to the DECA office (address below). We have included a template that may be useful in compiling your ideas.  Please use this template as a guide.  The more information you can give us, the better!

Please respond to Jen Hanson to indicate your interest or your camp’s interest in being involved. If you know of other individuals who may be interested, please let us know about them.

Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. On behalf of DECA and all children with diabetes, thank you.

Jen Hanson
